644. 1911 Victor Co. Victrola Phonograph/Record Player. Long before the modern stereo entertainment systems (DVD, CD, cassette tape, 8-track tape, reel to reel, vinyl records, radio etc.), there was the hand-cranked phonograph record player. No electricity or batteries needed. One simply turned the crank a few times, clicked the turnstile on and carefully placed the needle arm down on the edge of the spinning record. A few more cranks might be needed from time to time, otherwise the music would ring forth to the delight of everyone present. Before the flat disc records were used, wax tube-like cylinders were the norm. These were even more fragile but played amazingly well for the times. This model was manufactured in 1911. It was acquired by Charles Albert Schumacher, III and Dorice E. (Marean) (Gemma) Schumacher when they purchased the Lancaster Town Poor Farm in 1947. It is believed to have belonged to one of the former residents at the Town Farm. For many years the Poor Farm residents enjoyed using this marvelous invention. The Lancaster Poor Farm was at the corner of Schumacher Road and Main St. on Ballard Hill since 1872. She owned the Captain Samuel Ward House that once stood on the corner of Main St. and George Hill Road (approximately where AUC’s Lenheim Hall now stands). Mrs. Ware was instrumental in organizing the local Swedenborgian Chapel on Neck Road, Lancaster, Mass., and was a charter member of the Wilder Hall Chapel built on Neck Road (formerly the home of the Lancaster Current Topics Club and now a private residence). Her brother, John Greene Chandler, wrote the first American edition of Chicken Little in 1840. This old trunk was likely purchased by Mrs. Ware on one of her many European trips, as the label within bears the name of a London company. The trunk was purchased at auction by John Schumacher-Hardy, having come from the estate of the late Herbert H. Hosmer, Jr., Mrs. Ware’s great-grandnephew. On loan from John Schumacher-Hardy. 710. Cane-seated chair with accompanying caned footstool, 19th century. This 19th century chair and accompanying footstool came from the estate of Herbert H. Hosmer, Jr. (1913–1995). Samuel Ward House (formerly at the northwestern corner of Main St. and George Hill Rd. in South Lancaster, now Atlantic Union College’s Lenheim Hall). These antiques represent locally owned examples of a once highly favored design for chair seats: caned. Caning was a popular folk art of the 19th and early 20th centuries that few people today know how to do. Due to their more fragile condition (especially decades after their intricately woven material dries, ages, and becomes more brittle), many such chairs have since been destroyed and discarded. Before World War II, most of Lancaster’s roads were unpaved. Gravelly dirt roads were the normal mode of transportation throughout town. And up until the Depression, many folks still employed use of a horse and wagon or carriage for local transportation not undertaken by foot (“Shank’s mare”). On temporary loan from John C.
