Hello, everyone!

Michelle Nguyen, a student at Nashoba Regional High School, is gathering donations of new children’s books for her honor society service project. She has created this display [continue reading to see photo] and will come to collect donations weekly (or sooner if the box fills up quickly). Please notify anybody looking to drop off books for her project that the box is on the other side of the play space in the juvenile nonfiction room

Thank you!

Going Mobile, beep beep!

Thayer Memorial Library Posted on Wednesday, September 22, 2021 by Rachel RosengardWednesday, September 22, 2021

Hey Folks

Mobile Hotspots are here at the Thayer Memorial Library!

Imagine a place where you can’t get an internet signal. Perish the thought and worry no more.

Through an American Rescue Plan Act grant administered by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners [MBLC], the Library was awarded – count’em – five mobile hotspots available to cardholders to checkout and surf to their delight.

These T-Mobile mobile hotspots fit in your pocket and can be used almost anywhere to connect to the internet via any Wi-Fi-enabled mobile device. Not sure if the T-Mobile network covers your next trip to the middle of nowhere. Check this map.

Borrowing one is as easy as coming to the Library and checking it out for one week. These devices are not holdable and cannot be returned to any Library other than the Thayer Memorial Library. Further details regarding loan rules will be given at checkout.

Average 4G LTE speeds may vary, but download speeds range between 6 – 8 Mbps. There is no cap on total bandwidth use.

Lancaster’s Thayer Memorial Library Awarded Federal Grant

Thayer Memorial Library Posted on Thursday, September 16, 2021 by Rachel RosengardThursday, September 16, 2021

At its July 8, 2021, Board meeting, the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC) awarded $350,410 in 35 grants to public and special libraries across the Commonwealth under the Federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA), which is funded through the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

The Thayer Memorial Library in Lancaster was awarded $10,000 for its Touch. Make. Learn. PLAY project. This will be the first year that the Library has received a grant award for this program.

“LSTA funds help us deliver innovative resources and programs to our community,” said Director Joe Mulé. “We are excited to expand our services for our younger patrons and their caregivers through this grant.”

Through its Touch, Make, Learn, PLAY project, Thayer Memorial Library will provide equitable access to intentional, interactive play spaces and programming to young children and their caregivers from Lancaster and neighboring communities. Children will develop essential skills by engaging in a play space that features toys, games, and other items that encourage making connections, social interaction, and growth and becoming part of a community of learners at an early age.

A series of free monthly programs – including music and movement classes for ages 0-5 and creative drama classes for ages 2-6 – will reinforce the importance of play and offer guidance on incorporating these important concepts outside of the library. Additional details will be made available on Thayer Memorial Library’s website, www.thayermemoriallibrary.org.

“This past year has shown us the importance of libraries to the communities they serve,” said Robert Favini, Head of Library Advisory and Development at the MBLC. “These grants allow libraries to address specific local needs. They demonstrate libraries’ commitment to serve all members of their communities, to education at any age, and to make local history accessible to everyone.”

In addition to the direct library grant program, the MBLC uses LSTA funds to support statewide programs and services, including summer reading programs, research databases, the statewide eBook program, the Commonwealth Catalog, and mass.gov/libraries which has information and resources for residents.

LSTA is administered on the federal level by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and in the Commonwealth by the MBLC. More information about LSTA can be found on the Board’s website at www.mass.gov/mblc. IMLS is the primary source of federal support for the nation’s approximately 123,000 libraries and 35,000 museums. Their mission is to inspire libraries and museums to advance innovation, lifelong learning, and cultural and civic engagement. IMLS’ grant-making, policy development, and research help libraries and museums deliver valuable services that make it possible for communities and individuals to thrive. An Open Letter to Friends and Neighbors

Thayer Memorial Library Posted on Friday, May 28, 2021 by Bob KadlecSaturday, March 4, 2023

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

We are grateful for your cooperation during the pandemic emergency. We were able to stay safe and continue to provide our services because of your support and collaboration.

This Saturday, the Commonwealth will adopt CDC face-covering guidance. This news is good to hear and a sign that the risk of acquiring or infecting someone else with COVID-19 is decreasing.

We at the Library still have concerns for those who cannot be vaccinated, like our young visitors or others at a high risk of getting very ill if they get infected. We understand and will continue to monitor CDC guidelines closely, but we also know that the threats imposed by COVID-19 have not been eliminated.

We recognize that people in our community have different risk tolerance levels. This week a few vaccinated folks mentioned to the staff that they looked forward to removing their mask on Saturday. However, many more folks spoke to us about their concerns about lifting the mask requirement. Therein lies our challenge.

We urge everyone visiting the Library to be kind and to please wear a mask while visiting regardless of their vaccine status. If someone drops by the Library without a mask, we will offer you one.

Like many of you, I experience the inconvenience associated with masking every day. I would prefer not to wear it after I am fully vaccinated – one more shot to go. However, I choose and prefer tolerating this inconvenience if it ensures a sense of security for those whose concerns may be greater than mine. It’s a charitable act, and I believe it fosters the ties that bind the citizens of this great town.

Although patrons are free to come into the building, we will continue our curbside pickup services. If you wish to pick up your materials that way, give us a call and make an appointment as you do now.

Thank you.
