This ten week war was the shortest declared war in the history of the United States. It is also possible that a member of Company K, 9th infantry, Massachusetts Volunteer Militia of Clinton retrieved this cockade which then made its way into this museum. Members of Company K that were from Lancaster included Robert J. McBell, George Matthews, and Thomas Gibbons who died from malaria. Two other Lancaster men served in Cuba; Albert E.
