Please join us to investigate the past imagined in two works of fiction.
Author Christine Duffy Zerillo discusses women and their changing roles during King Philip’s War, an armed conflict in 1675–1678 between Indigenous Americans and New England colonists.
Based on Duffy’s historical novel Still Here, this discussion centers on Mary Rowlandson’s narrative journal chronicling her captivity by Native Americans. Duffy’s book imagines Rowlandson’s relationship with her captor, the Pocasset Wampanoag sachem Weetamoo.

Remember when you had to eat bread by the loaf? It was such a pain. Sometimes you weren’t hungry enough to eat an entire loaf, and if you couldn’t finish it, whatever was left got stale.
What a hassle, right?
Then some genius figured out how to slice bread. Wow, everything changed overnight, and life became more manageable. Slicing bread became the cool thing to do.
Well, I have news for you.
kanopy is cooler than sliced bread.
The Library provides you, the mighty Lancaster resident, with a new service to enjoy from the ease of your comfy home – kanopy!
What is kanopy, Director Joe?
kanopy is a streaming service that works much like hoopla. Each library member gets five credits per month to select from a catalog of notable and enriching films, documentaries, and videos. They even have videos from the Great Courses and a collection curated, especially for kids.
Videos can be streamed through Roku, fire tv, Apple TV, Chromecast, on a tablet or PC.
To give kanopy a spin, use your Thayer Memorial Library membership number and PIN to create a kanopy account. You must be a Lancaster resident to use kanopy. Read kanopy’s privacy policy and then have some streaming fun.
Not sure how to start using kanopy or have a question? Contact me, and I will lickety-splitly get you up and running.
You don’t need to do so only if it’s Christmas, but some great troubadour of the 1980s did pine, “Christmas is the time to say I love you.”
Ten points if you can tell me -in the form of a question- who that was.
Nevertheless, you don’t have to adore or even observe Christmas; just love history – any history to enjoy this time of year.
For instance, did you know
It’s familiar to roller skate to church on Christmas in Venezuela? That Santa arrives on a camel in Kenya? That Swedes celebrate St. Lucia Day? Don’t know who St Lucia was? Join us to find out.
Enjoy Christmas Around The World, Wednesday, December 16 @ 6:30 p.m. presented by historian and performer Anne Barrett.
This is too cool for school, which is great since your kids will be home for the holidays- sort of like that already have been!
Sort of.
Put some light and warmth in your winter and join the Library’s first-ever Winter Reading Challenge!
From December 21 through February 28, patrons of all ages are invited to track reading, attend virtual events, and participate in other exciting activities on Beanstack.
All participants will be eligible for a grand prize drawing!

Lend them a helping hand
Put a little [or large] Ugly Holiday Sweater On.
This is for you and your neighbors, and we are motivated to facilitate this gleeful project. Put a smile on your neighbor’s face and please show us your “Sweata Weatha” Sweater!
Let me just say I know we wanted none of this. I could list it all – the stuff I never asked for – but I’m afraid you’re all too well aware of it. But here we’ve been and remain, together.
HOWEVER.
I have never been prouder to work at the Thayer Memorial Library and serving all of you that reside in this great town. The Mothertown! One village to unite them all.
Like me, I hope you can reflect on this terrible year and find the silver linings in your life and among those that mean the most. We made it this far. Let’s see the rest through to the end. Let’s be thankful we have each other.
Until then, I speak for the Trustees, the staff, Friends of the Thayer Memorial Library, and all that contribute to making this the Thayer Memorial Library of our times; thank you for your concern, support, and appreciation.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO YOU AND YOURS!
And, let’s not forget to be thankful for whatever our waistlines measure and ponder this.
Are you tired of eating the same holiday cookies year after year? If so, here’s a chance to expand your holiday cookie repertoire by partaking in The Great Thayer Memorial Library “Holiday Cookie Recipe Swap.”
Come, share your favorite recipes with us and receive a compilation of recipes submitted. We would like to credit recipes to someone, but you don’t have to share any personal information if you wish not to.
Instead of using your full name, consider just your first, your last, or your cat’s or some made-up name. We don’t care to whom you credit your recipe; however, we will be vetting whatever you rascals submit, so don’t be getting saucy.
What if I don’t bake, Director Joe?
Don’t worry. If you enjoy eating cookies, you can still participate. Just respond to Karen, and she will happily share whatever recipes are submitted.
So much has ensued in this great big imperfect world of ours, and yet here we are left to make the sweetest degustation lemonade possible. I prefer mine with palpable pulp., please.
I have a couple of announcements:
Since things linger to be bleh and meh, we are moving in advance with some new programming initiatives. We have one prepared to roll out that even now is a buzz and quite timely. I say again quite.
The Climate Crisis and its Solutions is a 20-minute exchange that includes persuasive photographs, statistics, and videos explaining the sources and effects of the climate crisis. This, of course, is a Zoom affair the Library is presenting this Thursday, November 19 @ 6:30 p.m.
Space is limited to 100 attendees. Don’t laugh. We’ve come close in prior Zoom programs.
To register for The Climate Crisis and its Solutions ZOOM presentation, email: ksilverthorn@lancasterma.net or phone Karen at 978-368-8928 Ext. 4 by Wednesday, November 18.
